Raptr to close down later this month

Video games social network and IM service Raptr will be shutting its doors by the end of September.

Founder and former pro-gamer Dennis ‘Thresh’ Fong said that the platform would be closed on September 30th. The company began life in 2007 as an achievement tracking service, primarily on Xbox Live, with it later pivoting to focus on PC gamers in 2014.

In its ten years, Raptr managed to attract 22m users from more than 100 different countries.

"We are sad to announce that we will be closing Raptr on September 30th, 2017. We want to start by thanking you for your support over the past 10 years," Fong said.

"The world is different today than when we first launched Raptr. Many companies offer game optimisation tools. Having an independent platform to do this is no longer necessary."

The platform is survived by its gameplay recording application, Plays.tv, which the firm confirmed to GI.biz in an email following the new about Raptr.

Apparently Plays.tv spun out of Raptr in 2016, going on to raise $15m in funding. Furthermore, most of the Raptr team now works at Plays.tv.

“In fact, Plays.tv has quickly outgrown Raptr and has been our primary focus for years now,” Fong said.

“This is not unlike what happened with Twitch and Justin.tv,"
