Iconic toy brand LEGO is going to making its own video games moving forwards.
That's according to the company's chief executive, Niels Christiansen, who told the FT that it was increasing its capacity to make its own game projects.
“We can definitely say as long as we’re under the Lego brand we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical. [Games development in-house] is something we’re building up,” Christiansen said.
Asked about how LEGO was competing in a world with more competition for its audience's time than ever - such as Fortnite and YouTube – Christiansen said that the company wasn't going to be overinvesting in new areas.
“We have made quite a few investments in the future — I’d almost rather overinvest. That’s the benefit of being family-owned and long term,” he said.
LEGO has previously – for the most part – teamed up with developers such as TT Games to produce its video game output. At the start of the 2000s, the Danish toy brand lacked focus and was investing heavily in areas it was not performing too well in, such as video games. There's no word as to whether LEGO is ditching third-party partnerships altogether this time around.
Recently, the company partnered with Epic Games for LEGO Fortnite.
