Minecraft film made $313m in opening weekend

The recently-released A Minecraft Movie made $313 million in box office revenue around the world.

That's according to Variety, which reports that the film made $163 million in the United States alone. That's higher than the expectations that analysts had for the flick; some thought that the movie would make as little as $70 million, with others reckoning that the film would bring in $90 million. The $163 million figure is slightly higher than the $157 million estimate for Sunday evening.

The remaining $150 million came from international audiences.

“When we make films, we all hope they will connect with the culture,” said the chair of Legendary Entertainment, Mary Parent. “But when they do, they take on a life of their own. It’s like lighting dynamite.”
