Indie publisher Devolver Digital has cut staff at Reigns developer Nerial by 40 per cent.
In its 2024 Financial Year report, the company revealed that it had made layoffs at the studio to address "issues" with some of its recent releases. At the time of writing, Nerial boasts 13 members of staff on LinkedIn, but it's unclear if this is before or after the layoffs have taken place.
Reigns has made over $20 million in revenue to date.
Devolver has also announced that Polish developer Artificer had its workforce cut by over 50 per cent back in early 2024, with a new greenlighting processs implemented at the studio so it creates "projects better suited for current market conditions and gamer trends". Meanwhile, publishing labels Good Shepherd and Big Fan has laid off over 50 per cent of its staff during 2024.
Overall, Devolver has lost over 30 members of staff between 2023 and 2024.
The company also provided some updates on how its stable of games were performing. Cult of the Lamb has made over 90 million in lifetime revenue, while Astroneer has exceeded $80 million. The Gungeon series has made over $40 million and has shifted over five million copies to date; more than 500,000 of those were sold in March 2025.
Devolver is also reducing its investment in third-party titles; back in 2022, the firm was spending, on average, $2.99 million on these games, but this is set to dip to $1.73 million in 2025 and $1.04 million in 2026.
